The Summerville Community Orchestra

The Summerville Community Orchestra(SCO) is for instrumentalists of adult and high school age with at least three years playing experience and who will commit to faithful attendance at rehearsals and performances as scheduled.  The formation of the orchestra is a result of interest in such a group as discovered by the Greater Summerville Music Forum.

Directing the SCO is Alexander Agrest, an experienced, active musician and core member of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra who is currently working on his doctoral dissertation in conducting at the University of South Carolina.  Mr. Agrest has been the Director since February 2005.

Program material for SCO includes mostly well-known classical, folk, and seasonal music of moderately difficult playing level.

Rehearsals are held each Monday night from 7:00 - 9:15 p.m. at the Alston Middle School ( in the band building behind the primary school building ) at 500 Bryan Street in Summerville, SC. Rehearsals are year round except for June and July.

Amateur Chamber Music Players, Inc.

Amature Chamber Music Players, Inc. traces its origins back to 1947 and an idea of an American business executive named Leonard Strauss, whose work involved a good deal of time traveling. Tired of practicing alone in hotel rooms, he dreamed of a network of chamber musicians who could contact one another for string quartets at home on when "on the road." The organization grew in membership all over the world and today there are members in 57 countries. In 1969 ACMP was incorporated in New York State as a non-profit organization and it is recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt organization.

In 1993, the ACMP Foundation was established to support the aims and purposes of the ACMP. Since inception, 1,862 awards totaling over $2.6 million have been disbursed. The Foundation currently makes awards in four catagories: Community Music, Weekend Workshops, Special Initiatives, and Home Coaching. Please visit their website for Grant Guidelines, Applications, and more information.
